The ›summer of migration‹ has been a central topic of medial and political discourse since 2015. The perspective of the media in Germany quickly shifted from the protection of refugees towards the protection of the state from refugees. This shift was partly made possible by the entanglement of the discursive fields of ›Islamist terror‹ with that of ›refugee migration‹, as well as by (re)producing orientalistic and racist representations. This discursive entanglement and its medial and political impact constitute the object of this paper. Using the Sociology of Knowledge Approach to Discourse, we discuss how media reports of 2015 and 2016 interlinked discourses on migration and on ›terror‹. We analyze how refugees, constructed as both a security and cultural threat, alongside a ›weak state‹ with an unrestricted migration regime, were portrayed as the cause of ›terror‹ attacks. Furthermore, by looking at the current political debate, we propose first considerations on how this entanglement continues to influence the political discourse on both refugees and the European border regime.
