Helge SchwiertzAbstract
This article analyzes the struggles of undocumented youth in New York and their campaign for the New York DREAM Act, a piece of state legislation that would facilitate their access to higher education. For understanding how they can organize despite their illegalized status, I focus practices of empowerment and the emergence of political subjectivities, especially in form of the coming out. I argue that the political practice of undocumented youth comprises elements of advocacy, which aim at certain changes in legislation like the DREAM Act, but also elements of radical politics and democracy.
