How do technologies affect the production of European borders? This question has not only been asked by social and cultural scientists in recent years. In my research project, I also posed it to those that themselves produce border (control) technologies, either as employees of arms manufacturers, research institutions like the Fraunhofer Institute, or EU institutions such as Frontex and the European Commission. Their answers emphasize the fact that the introduction of technologies means more than merely the use of new technologies. It is accompanied by an increase in significance and legitimation of those who produce such technologies, i.e., industries and research institutions. The introduction of new technologies ultimately goes hand in glove with a dehumanization and geopoliticization of perspectives on borders.
