Abstract

Abstract This article outlines the possible consequences of the asylum border procedures under the new Common European Asylum System (CEAS), focusing on the Closed Controlled Access Center (CCAC) on Samos. For the short period since the EU commissioner’s promise »no more Morias!« and the subsequent opening of the CCAC in September 2021, this article evaluates the transforming conditions based on the psycho-geographical counter-mappings created by de facto detainees and human rights defenders. Like the former Reception and Identification Center (RIC) Moria on Lesvos, the old RIC on Samos subjected its residents to the inhumane and degrading conditions of a torturing environment. In contrast, there was reason to believe that the new CCAC, built for 43 million euros and said to follow the best humanitarian standards, would explicitly not meet these criteria. However, the counter-mappings expose how the violent neglect of the old RIC transforms into the surveilled and weaponised space of yet another torturing environment. Hidden from the public gaze, the CCAC creates a reminiscent of Moria.
